Do you have projects coming up? Little ones? BIG ones? Winter ones? Do you aspire to have projects? Have you given this any thought? Recently, I was tasked with a significant project that I had to handle myself. The weight of this project made me feel like I couldn’t get on with my life until it was finished! There was no getting around it. I had to face it squarely, tackle it, and not relent till it was finished and off my plate! Have you ever experienced the heaviness of a project like this? Recently? Currently? Does it paralyze you? What do you do about it? How do you handle it? How do you want it to go? Faced with such a daunting undertaking, it got me to thinking about projects in general. The types of tasks we are confronted with all the time. More importantly, it got me thinking about HOW we handle them. Or, shall I say, how we CHOOSE to handle them. In the simplest of terms, I see 3 categories of projects we tackle regularly: 1. Personal projects, only WE can do ourselves, 2. Projects that can be delegated (or parts delegated), and 3. Projects that are bad ideas, not well planned, a waste of time, fruitless, or just plain stupid! These are the ones we need to either adjust or just let go of, abandon, cancel completely. Here is some rationale and strategy, to help you identify and deal with the project at hand: 1 The Personal Project: It is ALL up to you, and only you. No one else can get this done. Now what? How do you proceed with the least amount of pain possible? Whether it be taking a class, writing an assignment, studying for a test, gathering info for taxes, this is a project you need to know inside and out. And it’s going to take time and energy and suck the life out of you, if you let it! You need to face it head on, confront it squarely, lean into it and own it! You’re not getting around it, you have to go THROUGH it. How? Start with a set deadline, because you don’t want this to take one minute longer than necessary. Break it apart into smaller sections that you can achieve and feel good about. Force yourself to step away at times. I mean really step away…till the next scheduled time slot to chip away at the next piece. Work this way… scheduled times, sections of progress, step away…repeat…repeat…repeat…until it is FINISHED! Then the reward! There! You did it! And you didn’t have to think about it all day, every day, constantly having it hanging over your head. Nope. You could do other things, because the plan was in place, the schedule was set, the end-point established. You planned your work, and worked your plan. Enjoy the reward of accomplishment! 2. The Assignable Project: If YOU personally don’t have to do the work, assign it to others! DELEGATE! Here’s why. Others can move through it more quickly, less personally, than you can. You will have more freedom of time for things that DO need your personal attention. You will enjoy peace of mind, sitting back, waiting for the results. It’s pleasing to know you can surrender control to a trustworthy person…like a Virtual Assistant. Like ME! Yes, I can help you! 3. The Questionable Project: This project needs more consideration, or, frankly, needs to be cancelled. Take a good, hard look at this one. Is it a fruitful endeavor? Does it need more thought, more narrowed focus? What is the end goal? Is it worth your precious time and energy? Is it worth the money spent assigning it to some one or some team? Can it be salvaged, from a colossal waste of energy to something worthwhile? Every mission deserves a minute or two of proper discernment, whether it’s worth the time, energy, and possibly the money, to do it. Take the time. Make it count!
