The practice of being present is something I am constantly working on. Sometimes it’s easy to be in the moment, letting it all unfold, relinquishing control. At other times, not so much! When dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, I fight hard to be attentive to the here and now. Can you relate?
To me, in the simplest of terms, presence equals connection. Having connection with who I’m with, what I’m doing, what it feels like, and how I show up.
Ask yourself this…have you ever really paused and been purely delighted tasting that first sip of morning coffee, uplifted to chills with a song you’ve heard a thousand times, stirred by the scent of wood burning in a fireplace nearby, awestruck by the beauty of the sunset’s colors, heartened by the warmth of the sun on your back on a chilly day?
Have you ever decided to give someone your undivided attention? Been wholeheartedly captivated, without judgment or distraction, by their story, idea, or problem? Responded to them in a meaningful way, because you were actively listening? Have you ever experienced the same empathy from another? Felt the appreciation of being heard?
Ultimately the practice of being present is the road to gratitude. Profound gratitude and awareness of what’s happening around us, who surrounds us, and what’s happening within us; body, mind, heart and soul. Gratitude for ALL experiences, not just the good ones.
The practice of being present takes time and patience, but even small, consistent efforts can lead to incalculable changes in how we experience life. Increased connection, awareness, fulfillment, joy, and gratitude are why being present is something I have to have. What about you?
